Operation and Planning Support System for Murcia Tram



Since May 2011, the city of Murcia has its first tramway line. This line is composed of 28 stops and has an approximate length of 28 Km. The service is operated with 11 trams.

Emte Sistemas, and in general, the COMSA-EMTE group among other contributions to the project, has completed the design, development, installation and commissioning of an integrated system for planning, management and operation of Murcia Tram.

The system includes the following modules:

  • Planning:
    • Reference Management: network topology, vehicle and driver management, timetables.
    • Timetable generation: Definition of constraints, timetable creation, timetable optimization.
    • Services Management: Assigment of vehicles to services and drivers.
  • Realtime Management:
    • Tracking: Geographic and synoptic representation
    • Service Monitoring: Supervision of timetable compliance
    • Regulation: Control of advance / delay to minimize timetable deviations
    • Vehicle Communication: Text messaging and audio communications
    • Alarm Management: operational, technical and safety
  • Passenger Information System: Displays and PA management (onboard and at stops).
  • Operation:
    • Historical Analysis: Alarms and events reports
    • Lab vehicle: Recording of all times and positions for timetible optimization
    • Statistical Analysis: Line operation reporting
    • QoS indicators: Punctuality and commercial speed reporting
  • Audio Communications: Audio communications integration (TETRA, Telephony) in Control Center operator workstations.



The support system is based on esTRAUSS, specifically int the modules:

The esTRAUSS hardware architecture for the L1 Murcia Tram is designed with a pair of server for real-time functionalies, and another pair for offline (Planning and Operation), arranged in a configuration that ensures operation in redundancy (hot-stand by). Since there is only one control center, both the main and secondary serves are installed in the same location. 

Regarding to on board elements, the following equipment has been provided for each vehicle:

  • Controller: Process equipment that handles on-board equipment alarms, manages the communications with the control center, manages passenger information and driver consoles.
  • Driver consoles: Display equipment used to inform the driver about the service is being performed, as well as warnings about timetable deviations
  • Radio: TETRA communication equipment for transmission of audio data
